lily, is that you?
hiding there in the darkness?
come out and play lily
come out and play
the grass is green and the clouds gone
and i don't feel silly
anymore
lily was only six years old
when her daddy went away
the winter was long and cold
and she begged him to stay
for days and days she cried for him
for him to come back home
each morning she looked at the window again
but he wasn't coming back home
mommy, oh mommy why did daddy go?
this question she asked everyday
but mommy, dear mommy said no
go on lily go out and play i'll tell you someday
days turned into months and months to years
poor little lily eventually lost count of the tears
daddy became just a memory that lily couldn't recall
and slowly the darkness around lily did fall
lily was now all of seventeen
in black everywhere she did go
her sarcasm sharp as a tack and her wit so keen
now she was telling dear old mommy no
tears she no longer shed
crying is for little girls who can't make it on their own
lily had to be tough, cause daddy was dead
if only she could remember, if only she had known
daddy had been keeping track of his little girl
daddy was planning his return
one more day lily, why couldn't you hold on?
i was coming home to tell you why i'd been gone
now all i have are thoughts of what might have been
and a wish to see you again
lily, oh lily the darkness took you from me
that poison you pushed into your veins
did not set you free
that poison you pushed into your veins
did not set you free
lily is here in the darkness
she doesn't hide anymore
she plays here forever
in the land where dead flowers grow
hiding there in the darkness?
come out and play lily
come out and play
the grass is green and the clouds gone
and i don't feel silly
anymore

ReplyDeleteThis was a poem I really felt I hit my stride on.
One of the few poems I've "performed" publicly. I made a lady in the front row cry.
I wouldn't say Lily is a real person, but I know a Lily or two.
